Inside North Korea

(Mar. 13–16) The North Korean Central News Agency reported, “Kim Jeong-il gave field guidance at Bakcheon Silk Mill in North Pyeong-an Province. He stated that increasing the production of textiles is an important project that is directly linked to improving the people’s standard of living and noted the need for a turning point should in settling the problem of clothing. Kim also called for strengthened combat capability during his visit to the Command of Guard Seoul Ryu Gyeong-su 105 Tank Division of the KPA.”

(Mar. 14) North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun reported in an editorial, “Any attempt to accept the freedom of thought much touted by the imperialists would entail serious consequences. This is proved by the tragic realities in those countries where socialism collapsed.”

(Mar. 16) North Korea’s Central Broadcasting Station reported, “A national defense sporting event for the graduating students of the middle schools in downtown Pyongyang was held on March 15 at Kim Il Sung Stadium, and was attended by the Minister of Defense.” It further reported, “Sporting events were held in provinces, cities and counties across the nation as well. demonstrating the authority of regulations and groups.”

(Mar. 17) North Korea’s Central Broadcasting Station reported, “The revolutionary spirit is the treasured sword guaranteeing unfailing victory for a Songun North Korea that gives birth to an immortal history and proud reality.”

(Mar. 18) North Korea’s Central Broadcasting Station reported, “Pak Yong-seok, chairman of the Control Commission of the WPK Central Committee, died of prostate cancer on March 17, 2007 at the age of 80. Kim Jeong-il sent a wreath to the bier on March 18.”

Outside North Korea

(Mar. 13) In a Q&A session with the North Korean Central News Agency regarding the suspension of UNDP assistance to North Korea, a spokesperson for North Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs contended, “It makes no difference to us whether we [the DPRK] receive support from the United Nations Development Program, but we will not tolerate in the least any foolish attempt to destroy our integrity.”

(Mar. 17) North Korea’s Central Broadcasting Station reported, “On the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the conclusion of an agreement on economic and cultural cooperation between North Korea and Russia, the Russian ambassador to the DPRK gave a banquet at the Daedong-gang Club for the Diplomatic Corps.”

(Mar. 17) In an editorial, North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun emphasized, “Japanese Prime Minister Abe’s true intention in denying the forceful mobilization of comfort women lies in pressing for Japanese militarism through re-invasion. The people of Korea will never tolerate the provocative and thoughtless remarks of these barbarians.”

Inter-Korean Issues

(Mar. 12) North Korea’s Central Broadcasting Station contended, “Safeguarding the peace is the primary national task for our people today. The struggle to safeguard peace is a righteous patriotic struggle intended to build a favorable environment for the reunification of the fatherland.”

(Mar. 17) North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun propagandized, “Under the banner of ‘our nation itself,’ the entire people of Korea must drive the US forces, who are a cancer on peace, out from South Korea through a nationwide anti-US struggle.”

(Mar. 18) North Korea’s Rodong Shinmun contended, “The RSOI and Foal Eagle joint military exercises staged by the US in South Korea are reckless acts of playing with nuclear power that go against the flow of the times and of peace, and against the six-party talks. The United States must abandon its audacious attempt to launch pre-emptive nuclear strikes against North Korea.”
