o Inside North Korea
- The North Korean Central News Agency (Jan. 22) said, "Imperialists, including the US, have relentless ambitions to invade the DPRK and enemies are persistently and continuously maneuvering against the DPRK. In connection with this situation, the DPRK’s emphasis on its defense industry is emerging as a life-or-death issue.” It underlined, "The DPRK has been consistently taking the position of placing top priority on the military and putting the development of the defense industry on the front burner.”
- Rodong Shinmun (Jan. 23) said in its political commentary titled “Spirit of Taecheon,” "The newly constructed Taecheon 4th Youth Power Plant is the flame of new creation and advancement that imbues the whole nation with revolutionary passion, militant spirit and conviction for victory.”
o Outside North Korea
- Quoting a Foreign Ministry spokesperson’s response to a question posed by a North Korean Central News Agency reporter, the Central Broadcasting Station (Jan. 25) said, "Recently, the US concocted a story that we might have diverted UNDP funds for the development of nuclear weapons, fueling maneuvers against the DPRK.” It alleged that “the US is applying increasing pressure by unreasonably finding fault with even legal cooperative activities by UN agencies. Such a contention by the US is an outrageous plot.”
- Quoting the Foreign Ministry spokesperson’s response to a question posed by a North Korean Central News Agency reporter, the North Korean Central News Agency (Jan. 27) reported, "Recently, some Western press agencies are producing misleading reports that the DPRK is pursuing nuclear cooperation with Iran. This is an outrageously ungrounded and trumped-up story.”
o Inter-Korean Issues
- Quoting a statement issued by the secretary-general of the National Front, the North Korean Central News Agency (Jan. 23) emphasized, "The South Korean government should not engage in the anti-nationalistic act of sanctioning its brethren by following foreign forces. It must take the path of national reconciliation and unity as well as the improvement of inter-Korean relations at the earliest possible date.”
- Quoting the Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee spokesperson’s response to a North Korean Central News Agency reporter, the North Korean Central News Agency (Jan. 24) emphasized, "The South Korean press made false reports that we [the DPRK] decided to pursue the Gaeseong tourism project in collaboration with Hyundai Asan. However, we have never entered into any official agreement with Hyundai in connection with the tourism project.”
