North Korea Weekly (Jan. 8 - Jan. 14, 2007)
ROK National Intelligence Service
o Inside North Korea
- The Rodong Shinmun contended (Jan. 9), “We [the DPRK] are highly stabilized both socially and politically, and have a strong deterrence of war. Building an economic power is the most urgent task facing us [the DPRK].”
- In an editorial, the Rodong Shinmun stated (Jan. 12), “The ideology of a self-reliant economy as presented by Kim Jeong-il is the steadfast guideline for building an economic power, most accurately reflecting the requirements of the Seon-gun (Military-first) and IT industry era.”
o Outside North Korea
- The North Korean Central News Agency contended (Jan. 12), “As a result of the US maneuvers to sanction the DPRK and its war rehearsal last year, a situation was created on the Korean peninsula, in which a war could be provoked. However, it was entirely due to North Korea’s patient efforts toward peace and love and its power of self-control that a war did not break out.”
- In an article titled “Militant Power Frantic to Complete Preparations for Re-invasion,” the Rodong Shinmun blasted (Jan. 14), “The fact that Japan elevated the status of its Defense Agency to a Defense Ministry on Jan. 9 is an extremely dangerous military measure taken to reorganize the Self-defense Forces into an aggressive military power and to prepare mobilization for an aggressive war at its discretion.”
o Inter-Korean Issues
- The Central Broadcasting Station propagandized (Jan. 10), “In the New Year, the South Korean people should launch a struggle against the Grand National Party and against the conservative forces until the pro-US conservatives, including the Grand National Party, are dead and buried.”
- The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service stated (Jan. 11), “The New Year Joint Editorial has incorporated a direction and tasks for the movement to reunify the fatherland, and is a reasonable slogan that accurately reflects the fundamental principles for the resolution of the reunification issue, the situation created within and outside of Korea, and the intentions of the entire nation.”
