National Meeting of Intellectuals Opens

  Pyongyang, November 30 (KCNA) -- The national meeting of intellectuals opened at the April 25 House of Culture in Pyongyang on Friday.
    The meeting will review arduous yet worthwhile struggle over the past 15 years since the meeting of Korean intellectuals and discuss the issue of letting intellectuals creditably perform their pioneers' role in the nation building.
    Attending it are Kim Yong Nam, Kim Yong Il, Kim Il Chol and other senior officials of the party, the army and the state, leading officials of the party and armed forces organs, ministries and national institutions and working people's organizations, the delegation of Korean intellectuals in Japan and exemplary intellectuals.
    A congratulatory message from the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea to the participants in the meeting was conveyed at the meeting. The message highly praised the participants in the meeting and other intellectuals from across the country for having performed shining exploits in the sacred struggle to defend Korean-style socialism and achieve the prosperity of the country, while advancing steadfastly along the road of the arduous Songun revolution under the leadership of the WPK.
    The message expressed the belief that they would single-mindedly unite around Kim Jong Il and demonstrate to the whole world the revolutionary stamina and creative skills of the Korean intellectuals fully trained in the crucible of the Songun revolution and vigorously propel the cause of building a great prosperous powerful socialist nation and thus live up to the great trust and expectation of the party and the people.
    Choe Thae Bok, alternate member of the Political Bureau and secretary of the C.C., the WPK, in his report delivered at the meeting said:
    The big meeting of intellectuals from across the country opened today reflects Kim Jong Il's noble plan, intention and iron will to build a great prosperous powerful socialist nation on this land without fail as early as possible as desired by President Kim Il Sung by remarkably raising the role of intellectuals as required by the developing reality in the new era of the Juche revolution, the Songun era.
    The history of the revolutionary cause of Juche, the revolutionary cause of Songun is a glorious history in which the position and role of intellectuals have been regarded as important and steadily enhanced thanks to the outstanding idea and leadership of the WPK, he said, and went on:
    Kim Il Sung, having a deep insight into the position and role of intellectuals in the revolutionary struggle and in the building of a new society long ago, regarded them as a main part of the driving force of the revolution and made sure that the emblem of the WPK was emblazoned with a writing brush along with a hammer and a sickle.
    This is the most unique policy of intellectuals which could be set forth by the President, the great founder of the Juche idea and genius of creation and construction, and a most vivid expression and a shining example of valuing the intellectuals.
    The President's idea of attaching importance to intellectuals and his leadership exploits have been successfully carried forward by Kim Jong Il in the new century.
    Kim Jong Il put forward the intellectuals in the DPRK as Songun revolutionary comrades sharing the same destiny with the Party during the period when he has enforced the Songun politics in all fields. Thanks to his profound trust, their position has reached the highest level.
    All the successes gained by the intellectuals in the struggle to defend the Party and the socialist country and lay a springboard from which to build a great prosperous powerful country are the precious fruition of Kim Jong Il's great idea of attaching importance to intellectuals as he has taught them the truth of sure victory and led them to perform heroic feats, deeply trusting them as the eternal Songun revolutionary comrades of the Party, and his energetic leadership.
    It was the President's lifetime intention to build a great prosperous powerful socialist country. And it is Kim Jong Il's invariable will and firm determination to successfully put into practice the behests of the President by building at an early date the great prosperous powerful country strong in national power and rich in everything, in which the people can lead a happy life with nothing to desire more on this land.
    The reporter called for performing heroic feats in the general march for Songun revolution to occupy the high peak of the great prosperous powerful socialist country.
