US, North Korea Begin Second Day of Nuclear Talks

02 September 2007

Negotiators from the United States and North Korea have begun a second day of talks about nuclear weapons and efforts to normalize relations between the two countries.

Delegations led by U.S. nuclear envoy Christopher Hill and North Korea's Kim Kye Kwan met again in Geneva Sunday after reporting progress in their first day of discussions.

Hill said Saturday that the two sides reached what he called a "substantial understanding" on what needs to be accomplished in the coming months. He said he was looking forward to progress at the next session of six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear program. Kim said he expects the meeting will produce "fruitful" results.

Negotiators in Geneva also discussed what needs to be done to remove North Korea from Washington's list of state sponsors of terrrorism.

North Korea agreed in February to end its nuclear program in exchange for political concessions and fuel aid from the U.S., South Korea, China, Japan and Russia.

In July, North Korea closed its main nuclear facility.

The next round of six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear weapons program is scheduled for later this month.
