Internal Affairs

  • The Central Broadcasting Station reported on August 6 that Chairman Kim Jong-il gave on-the-spot guidance to the newly built People’s Hospital in Hamgyong-bukdo.
  • According to the report by the Central Broadcasting Station on August 5, 7 and 8, Chairman Kim Jong-il gave on-the-spot guidance to the Nanam Coal Mechanic Plant, Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex, and Sungjin Steel Works Complex.
  • Chairman Kim Jong-il inspected a sub-unit of KPA Unit 156, reported the Central Broadcasting Station on August 10.
  • According to the report by the Central Broadcasting Station on August 13, Chairman Kim Jong-il visited Jeongkwang temple in Hamgyong-namdo on August 12.

  • According to the report by Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on August 10, the spokesperson of the North Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation announced a statement regarding the kidnapping incident of South Koreans in Afghanistan .

Foreign Affairs

  • The six-party working level talks on the economy and energy cooperation was held in Panmunjom from August 7 to 8.
  • Through a statement by the spokesperson of the North Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation and reports by Chosun Sinbo, etc, North Korea maintained that the U.S. is responsible for the South Korean abduction incident in Afghanistan .
  • According to the report by the Central Broadcasting Station on August 8, Swedish ambassador Hans Dahlgren visited North Korea to discuss the improvement of the relationship between North Korea and EU and international issue.
  • The number of passage by foreign delegates to North Korea in July was 13, the same figure as the previous month.
