Weekly Report on North Korea (February 9, 2007 - February 15, 2007)

Internal Affairs

  • Commemorating the Chairman Kim Jeong-il’s 65 th birthday on February 16, North Korea held the Central Report Convention at the April 25 Hall of Culture on February 15, 2007.

In addition, several commemorating events were held: art performance, athletic meeting, exhibition of painting of Kim Jeong-il, and exploration of revolutionary historical site

  • Chairman Kim Jeong-il gave an on-the-spot guidance at the food factory in Chongjin, the newly built Kunmin power station, Orangchon power station No.1, and Jangyeonho fish farm, reported the Central Broadcasting Station and Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on February 8, 2007.
  • The volume of the North Korean trade with Japan in 2006 was USD120million and trade surplus was USD30million.
    • export: USD80million, (decreased by 42.4% compared with the previous year),
    • import: USD40million, (decreased by 29.8% compared with the previous year)
  • The volume of the North Korean trade with Thailand in 2006 was USD400million and trade deficit was USD60million.
    • export: USD170million, (increased by 26.7% compared with the previous year),
    • import: USD230million, (increased by 10.3% compared with the previous year)

Inter-Korean Affairs

According to the report by the Central Broadcasting Station on February 13, the spokesperson of the Central Committee of the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland announced the statement on February 12 to condemn the United States for trying to verify the South Korean presidential candidates.

Foreign Affairs

1. The third phase of the fifth round of the six-party talks were resumed in Beijing, China from February 8 to 13, and parties came to an agreement on the first step for implementation of a September 19 Joint Statement.

2. The Pyongyang Broadcasting Services reported on February 13 about the agreement in the third phase of the fifth round of the six-party talks. In the report, it watered down the abandonment of the nuke facilities to ‘temporary suspension of them’.

3. Through the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea denounced Japan for its mentioning on abduction issue in the six party talks, saying it was a vicious behavior to destroy the talks.
