Kim Jong Il Gives Field Guidance to Chongjin University of Mining and Metallurgy

   Pyongyang, February 7 (KCNA) -- General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave field guidance to Chongjin University of Mining and Metallurgy. He went round a monument to the on-the-spot instructions given by President Kim Il Sung, a room for preserving revolutionary relics and a room devoted to the history of the university.
    The university which was established on the personal initiative of the President and traversed a glorious path under his wise guidance has developed to be a centre for training dependable technical personnel, he said, noting that the undying revolutionary feats performed by the President will shine long with the history of the university.
    He went round the Science Exhibition of the university.
    Making the rounds of exhibits for a long while, he acquainted himself in detail with the achievements made in the development of education and scientific researches. He was greatly satisfied to learn that the teachers and students of the university have done a lot of work.
    He went round a room for information service, an e-library, a room for computer designing, a hall for scientific idea, a geology museum and other places of the university to learn about how education is conducted there. He praised the University for having created good environment to help its students acquire rich scientific knowledge.
    He set forth highly important tasks which would serve as guidelines in education and scientific researches at the university. It is possible to rapidly develop the nation's science and technology under a long-term plan only when reserves for scientists and technicians are trained on a high level as required by the developing reality, he noted, adding that Chongjin University of Mining and Metallurgy has a very important mission and duty to perform in consolidating the foundation of the nation's independent national economy and giving fullest play to its potential.
    He also called on the teachers of the university to steadily improve and strengthen the education to train more talented scientists and technicians as required by the developing reality, always bearing in mind the intention of the Party to bring the nation's science and technology to the world's level as quickly as possible.
    In order to train students as able scientists and technicians required by the IT era it is necessary to establish Juche in education, combine education and practice, steadily improve the contents and quality of education and decisively strengthen the scientific and technological education in particular, he stressed.
    He noted that by training an increasing number of scientists and technicians with a high level of technology in a brief span of time the university should settle issues now arising in making the national economy Juche-oriented, modern and scientific and, at the same time, actively explore new fields of science and technology which are of weighty importance in the development of the mining and metal industries in order to make a positive contribution to the rapid development of the nation's overall science and technology.
    In order to develop science and technology as required by the new century, it is necessary to fully equip students with new knowledge of technology, he said, urging the university to conduct a brisk work to introduce advanced technology in close touch with scientific research institutions and other universities.
    Pointing to the need to steadily expand the ranks of scientists and technicians, who should take the lead in building a scientifically and technologically strong country, in order to provide a scientific and technological guarantee for the high-pitched drive of the Korean people to accelerate the general march of the Songun revolution aimed at building a rich and powerful country, he called for reaching the high eminence of a great prosperous powerful nation by dint of science and technology as early as possible.
