North Korea Weekly (Dec. 18 - Dec. 24, 2006)
ROK National Intelligence Service
o Inside North Korea
- The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 23), “A National Meeting to mark the 15th anniversary of Kim Jeong-il’s assumption of supreme commandership of the KPA was held on December 23 at the April 25 House of Culture and was attended by senior officials of the WPK, the cabinet and the military, as well as workers from social organizations.”
- The North Korean Central News Agency propagandized (Dec. 18), “Over 190 model farming villages were magnificently built across North Korea. Among them, electricity was introduced to 19 villages while methane gas was introduced to 174 villages, enabling the agricultural workers to enjoy civilized life to the fullest.”
o Outside North Korea
- The Central Broadcasting Station contended (Dec. 21), “The United States agreed to permit the strategic flexibility of the South Korean authorities and of the USFK. It has accelerated war preparations for invading the DPRK by devising the Concept Plan 5029 Military Operation Plan, and by conducting RSOI (Reception, Staging, Onward Movement and Integration) as well as the Ulji Focus Lens joint military exercise, which have severely threatened peace and security of the Korean peninsula.”
- The North Korean Central News Agency reported (Dec. 23), “Vice Foreign Minister Kim Gye-gwan, who participated in the six-party talks, said in an interview in Beijing that the U.S. has called for suspending and verifying nuclear activities without taking any action toward lifting the sanctions. He stated that the DPRK is sternly opposed to this and will closely watch the attitude of the U.S. in the future.”
o Inter-Korean Issues
- In an editorial titled “Logic of Anachronistic Confrontation Utterly Unacceptable,” the Pyongyang Broadcasting Service contended (Dec. 21), “The archenemy theory blabbered about by anti-unification forces in South Korea is an intolerable criminal behavior against the nation that is aimed at sustaining the division of the nation by instigating hostility against members of the same race and inter-Korean confrontation through servility to foreign forces.”
- The Central Broadcasting Station stated (Dec. 22), “The abusive maneuvers of the pro-U.S. conservative forces have reached an extreme this year. The people of various sectors of South Korea must completely lay to rest the pro-U.S. conservative forces through their unified strength.”
