Inside North Korea

The North Korean Central News Agency reported (Dec. 11), “The cabinet has recently adopted regulations on developing and operating small- and medium-sized coal mines. This is an important measure taken to better resolve the fuel issue facing residents by increasing coal production to meet actual need.”

Quoting a Rodong Shinmun editorial, the North Korean Central News Agency contended (Dec. 14), “We must infuse energy into the economy and people’s lives bring forth the dawn of a great, prosperous and powerful socialist nation. The people’s lives must be stabilized as soon as possible so that they may deeply sense the superiority of the socialist system and further launch with force the grand task of building a great, prosperous and powerful nation.”

Outside North Korea

Quoting a Rodong Shinmun commentary, the North Korean Central News Agency contended (Dec. 11), “Japan is but a swindler that is not even qualified to participate in the six-party talks. Even if it were to join the six-party talks, it would merely create complexity in resolving the issue and waste time by raising worthless issues, without bringing the tiniest benefit to the talks.”

Quoting a Rodong Shinmun commentary, the North Korean Central News Agency contended (Dec. 13), “The United States is desperately creating an uproar against the DPRK by putting up the signboards of ‘democracy’ and ‘human rights.’ The U.S. human rights offensives will never work on us [the DPRK]. The US should drop its unjustifiable policy of politicization and selectivity and the application of double standards regarding the human rights issue.”

Inter-Korean Issues

Quoting a statement by Director Yang Cheol-shik of the Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland in a program titled “The meaningful year shining with the grand victory of the Three Patriotic Movement,” the Pyongyang Broadcasting Service contended (Dec. 14), “The movement for reunifying the fatherland achieved significant progress this year through the forceful staging of the ‘Three Patriotic Movement’ of independent reunification, peace and grand national unity.”

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Station propagandized (Dec. 16), “The youths and students of South Korea will have accumulated in-depth experience and learned many lessons in the struggle against the U.S. this year. They will further hoist the banner of the struggle against the US and battle in solid unity in the New Year.”
