ROK National Intelligence Service

Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 28), “Kim Jeong-il visited KPA Unit 1643 and a company of KPA Unit 851, where he called for strengthened combat capability.” It further reported that on September 3, Kim Jeong-il, accompanied by secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea Kim Gi-nam and First Vice Department Director of the WPK Central Committee Lee Jae-il, visited Guseong Machine Tool Factory and Guseong Chicken Farm. He stated that machine tools with outstanding performance should be produced and supplied in various sectors of the people’s economy and that sufficient meat and eggs should be provided to the people.

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 28), “The youths are the proud fighters and standard-bearers creating breakthroughs for advancement while standing at the forefront of building socialism. Such accomplishments are the glorious results of the wise leadership of the Party, which has embraced and led the youths.” It went on to say, “The youths should actively contribute to bringing the victory of the Seon-gun (Military-first) revolution one step closer.”

Outside North Korea

Quoting a commentary from the Rodong Shinmun, the Chosun Central News Agency contended (Aug. 29), “The maneuvers by the United States to build a missile defense system are plainly a criminal act that threatens and destroys the peace and security of the world and instigates a new arms race. The United States must abandon its ambition to dominate the world by force and terminate its maneuvers to build a missile defense system.”

On the occasion of the anniversary of joining the Non-Aligned Movement (Sept. 1), the Chosun Central News Agency quoted a commentary from the Rodong Shinmun and contended, “The high-handedness of the United States has rendered international nuclear non-proliferation systems such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) useless and is driving non-nuclear nations to own nuclear deterrents for self-defense.”

Inter-Korean Issues

Quoting an interview with a spokesperson for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, the Central Broadcasting Station stated (Sept. 2), “The fact that the United States and South Korea have gone through with the Ulji Focus Lens joint military exercise, which is a war rehearsal for invading the DPRK, is a crime against the people, and the people of South Korea must launch a struggle against the United States and against war.”
