Major Weekly Developments in North Korea (July. 24 - July. 30, 2006)
ROK National Intelligence Service
Inside North Korea
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 27), “About 100 mm of rain fell in Gangnyeong, Hwanghae Province, Woongjin and Gaeseong from 3 to 6 p.m. today (July 27).” It emphasized, “As a relatively large amount of rain is expected in south and north Hwanghae Province and in the southern area of Gangwon Province, thorough safety measures must be taken.”
The Chosun Central News Agency reported (July 26), “A national meeting was held at the April 25 House of Culture to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the victory in the great Fatherland Liberation War (the armistice agreement day) and was attended by senior officials of the party, politics and the military.” In his report, Kim Il-cheol, minister of the People’s Armed Forces, contended, “The missiles launched by us [the DPRK] were a routine military exercise for self-defense. The adoption of a resolution by the United States through the UN was a sheer act of racketeering, and we sternly condemn the UN resolution.”
Outside North Korea
In a commentary, the Chosun Central News Agency contended (July 24), “Our [the DPRK’s] missile launches were conducted under conditions wherein the safety situation in all sectors of the air, earth and sea were thoroughly confirmed. Accordingly, nobody, including vessels and commercial airlines, suffered any damage.”
Quoting its interview with a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chosun Central News Agency reported (July 25), “Israel’s strike on Lebanon is a dangerous act that is driving the Middle East region into a new war.” It blasted, “The United States is siding with Israel’s atrocities, calling them ‘self-defensive measures.’ This shows what a hypocritical and reckless regime the Bush administration is.”
Inter-Korean Issues
The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service reported (July 24), “We [the DPRK] have the mighty deterrent of war solidified under the banner of the Seon-gun (Military First) policy.” It went on to say, “When every one of the 70 million people of Korea launch the struggle against the US, against war and to safeguard peace under the slogan of ‘keeping peace by our nation itself,’ the peace of the nation and the safety of the people can be firmly protected.”
