Inside North Korea

The Chosun Central News Agency reported (July 21), “The torrential rains that fell in some areas of South Pyeongan, Gangwon and South Hamgyeong provinces between July 14 and 16 caused substantial losses.” It propagandized, “A recovery effort is being made through the mobilization of all forces and projects are underway to stabilize the lives of the flood victims in the disaster-stricken areas.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 19), “Agricultural farmers from across the nation, who are fully aware that they are the ones responsible for agricultural production, which is the basis for the building of a powerful, prosperous and great nation, are producing results in tackling mowing. The haystacks are rising higher in the paddies and dry fields each day on every cooperative farm.”

Outside North Korea

Quoting a commentary from the Rodong Shinmun, the Chosun Central News Agency reported (July 19), “The Middle East incident shows that without self-reliant defense capabilities, it is impossible to avoid invasions by enemies or safeguard the security of the people.” It further emphasized, “The sovereignty of the nation can be defended only through a strong capacity for self-reliant defense.”


The Chosun Central News Agency reported (July 23), “Hu Jintao, President of the People’s Republic of China, conveyed a message to Kim Jeong-il on July 22 in which he expressed sincere sympathy upon hearing the news that some areas of the DPRK were hit hard by the flood that caused enormous human and material losses.”

Inter-Korean Issues

The Chosun Central Broadcasting Station reported on a letter by Chairman of the Central Committee of the North Korean Red Cross Chang Jae-eon and addressed to the president of the Korean National Red Cross, which stated (July 19), “The reunion of families separated in the North and South can no longer be held, and both the special video reunion slated for August 15 and the construction of the reunion center at Mt. Geumgang can no longer take place.”
