Major Weekly Developments in North Korea (July. 10 - July. 16, 2006)

ROK National Intelligence Service

Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 12), “On the occasion of the Maritime Sports Months in July and August, the youths and students of Gangwon Province are actively engaged in various maritime sports activities.” It emphasized, “The youths and students will all become veteran swimmers and brave conquerors of the sea, and will grow into strong, brave warriors who guard Kim Jeong-il with a do-or-die spirit.”

Quoting Jeong Ryong-woo, vice-director of the Central Meteorological Institute under the Hydrometeorological Service, the Korean Central TV reported (July 16), “The rainy spell, which had temporarily subsided, resumed on July 10, and most areas of the DPRK were hit by torrential rains through July 16, with precipitation between 62 and 485 millimeters. In particular, heavy rain fell in the upper regions of Daedong River, and the river flooded for the first time since 1990.”

Outside North Korea

The Chosun Central News Agency reported (July 10), “On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the conclusion of the DPRK-China Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, Kim Jeong-il, Kim Yeong-nam and Pak Bong-ju exchanged greetings on July 10 with Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People’s Congress, and Wen Jiabao, premier of the State Council of China.

With regard to the adoption of the resolution of the UN Security Council, the Chosun Central News Agency carried a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (July 16) in which he blasted, “This resolution has branded the missile launches conducted by us [the DPRK] as ‘a threat to international peace and security’ and called for international pressure to disarm the DPRK. In so doing, the US sought to describe the issue between the DPRK and the US as an issue between the DPRK and the UN, and to form an international alliance against the DPRK.”

Inter-Korean Issues

Quoting a commentary from the Rodong Shinmun, the Chosun Central News Agency contended (July 13), “The three-point patriotic movement for independent reunification, peace and grand national unity is a methodical and realistic struggle representing the realities of the divided country and the demands of the June 15 era of reunification. It is the most judicious reunification movement, fully suited to the desire of the Korean people to repudiate interference and domination by outside forces and to resolve the issue of the reunification of the fatherland ‘by our nation itself’.”
