Major Weekly Developments in North Korea (July. 3 - July. 9, 2006)

ROK National Intelligence Service

Inside North Korea

The Chosun Central News Agency reported (July 3-4), “Kim Jeong-il, accompanied by WPK Secretary Choi Tae-bok, attended a performance by the State Academic Moiseyev Folk Dance Company of Russia (which arrived in Pyongyang on June 16). In giving on-site guidance at the newly-built Daeseong Tire Factory, Kim emphasized, ‘The working class of the DPRK should take the lead in introducing the culture created by soldiers in the Seon-gun (Military First) era.’”

On the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the demise of Kim Il-sung, the Chosun Central News Agency reported (July 8), “Senior party, political and military officials paid homage to Kim Il-sung at Geumsusan Memorial Palace on July 8. Also, a memorial musical concert, The Great Father of the People was performed at the Bonghwa Art Theater on July 8 and a documentary film, The Great Life in 1994 was screened at the People’s Palace of Culture on July 7.”

Outside North Korea

In a Q&A session with a correspondent from the Chosun Central News Agency, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contended (July 6), “These successful missile launches were part of a routine military exercise conducted in a normal manner by our [the DPRK’s] army in order to bolster deterrence for self-defense.” He went on to say, “Such legitimate rights of a sovereign nation are not repressed by any international law or agreement such as the DPRK-Japan Peace Declaration or the joint statements of the six-party talks.”

Inter-Korean Issues

Quoting a commentary from the Rodong Shinmun, the Chosun Central News Agency propagandized (July 4), “The entire people of Korea must bear in mind that the reunification of the fatherland cannot be achieved without a struggle against the United States, which is the obstacle hindering the progress of the June 15 reunification era, and must forcefully launch a struggle against the US for independence as well.”

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service blasted (July 5), “RIMPAC-2006, the grand-scale joint military exercise staged by the US imperialists and their followers, is a pre-planned, provocative and extremely dangerous rehearsal for a war of aggression targeting the DPRK.”
