Inside North Korea
The Chosun Central News Agency reported (May 29-June 3), “Kim Jeong-il inspected the command of KPA Large Combined Unit 264, KPA Unit 215, a subunit of KPA Unit 4318, KPA Unit 294, KPA Navy Unit 269 and called for strengthened combat readiness. He also inspected the young cadres training subunit of KPA Large Combined Unit 324 and attended performances given by art propaganda squads.
Outside North Korea
Quoting an interview with a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Central Broadcasting Station reported (June 1), “If the United States indeed made a political resolution to implement the June 19 Joint Declaration, then we again invite the head of the American delegation to the six-party talks to visit Pyongyang and give a first-hand explanation of this matter.” It went on to say, “If the United States applies heightened pressure on us [the DPRK], we will have no choice but to take ultra hard-line measures.’
The Chosun Central News Agency reported (June 2), “In a speech made at the ministerial meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement in Malaysia on May 30, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Su-heon stated, ‘North Korea is clinging to the ideology of the non-aligned movement, and the member nations should strengthen their solidarity in the struggle to safeguard autonomous rights and reject double standards in international relations.’”
Inter-Korean Issues
The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service contended (June 1), “The reunification movement our people are staging today is composed of the three major patriotic movements of independent reunification, peace and national grand solidarity. Herein lies the path toward the movement for reunification of the fatherland and the great strength of invincibility.”
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (June 3), “A delegation headed by Ju Dong-chan, vice chairman of the National Economic Cooperation Committee, left Pyongyang on June 3 to participate in the 12th meeting of the North-South Committee for the Promotion of Economic Cooperation.”
