Major Weekly Developments in North Korea (May. 15 - May. 21, 2006)
ROK National Intelligence Service
Inside North Korea
The Chosun Central News Agency reported (May 15-21), “Kim Jeong-il, accompanied by leading officials of the Worker’s Party of Korea and the Korean People’s Army, inspected a sub-unit(below battalion level) of Unit 155 of the KPA Navy honored with the title of O Jung Hup’s seventh regiment, KPA units 1891 and 1464, and enjoyed a performance given by the art groups of families of servicepersons of KPA units 762, 324, 488 and 524 participating in the 9th Contest of the Art Groups of Families of Servicepersons. Kim also inspected the commanding officers training unit of Large Combined Unit 549 of the KPA.”
The Rodong Shinmun contended (May 15), “There is no project that is more significant than resolving the food issue. The organizational and combat power of the WPK must be made well-known to the world in the fight for rice transplantation.” It further emphasized, “Let us brilliantly solidify the fight for rice transplantation and welcome a bountiful autumn filled with all kinds of grains from this soil.”
Outside North Korea
The Rodong Shinmun blasted (May 20), “The US insistence that the United States should have a monopoly on nuclear arsenals, that no other nation in the world should have one, and that no other country should have nuclear deterrence even if others attempt pre-emptive nuclear strikes against it is the logic of a thief.”
Inter-Korean Issues
The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service propagandized (May 21), “It is because of the United States that inter-Korean relations, which were progressing favorably, have suddenly deteriorated.” It went on to say, “The people of South Korea must boldly launch a struggle against the US to drive out from South Korea the US imperialists that are aggravating inter-Korean relations.”
