Inside North Korea
The Rodong Shinmun emphasized (Mar. 27), “We must actively accommodate modern science and technology in order to reconstruct and modernize the economy.” It went on to say, “We must accept the accomplishments of modern science and technology from a self-reliant perspective, reinforce the mighty force of our socialist self-reliant economy, and display the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance under the principle of guaranteeing maximum benefits.”
The Chosun Central News Agency reported (April 1), “All schools in the nation held a ceremony for the start of the new 2006 academic year.”
Outside North Korea
Quoting an interview with a spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chosun Central News Agency blasted (Mar. 28), “The suppression of Chongnyeon (General Association of Korean Residents in Japan), which plays the role of a diplomatic mission promoting friendly relations with the Japanese people, is a violation of the DPRK-Japan Pyongyang Declaration and an infringement on North Korea’s sovereignty.”
In its commentary, the Rodong Shinmun contended (Mar. 30), “It is an unfair double-standard that the US is barring even the peaceful nuclear activities of the DPRK while announcing that it plans to provide nuclear technology and fuel to some countries outside the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT).”
Inter-Korean Issues
With regard to the staging of Korea-US joint military exercises, the Rodong Shinmun contended (Mar. 28), “In the event inter-Korean relations deteriorate, Mt. Geumgang tourism is impeded and channels for visits to Pyongyang are shut down as a result of South Korea’s staging of joint military exercises in collusion with foreign forces, they will not be able to escape opposition and denunciation by the South Korean people.”
The Chosun Central News Agency reported (Mar. 28), “The groundbreaking ceremony for a water purification and supply station in the Gaeseong Industrial Zone was held on March 28, and was attended by North Korea’s Ju Dong-chan, director of the General Bureau for Central Guidance in the Development of the Special Zone, South Korea’s Kim Jae-hyun, president of the Korea Land Corporation, and others.”
