Major Weekly Developments in North Korea (Jan. 16 - Jan. 22, 2006)
ROK National Intelligence Service
Inside North Korea
The Central Broadcasting Station and Central Television reported (Jan. 18), “Kim Jeong-il paid an unofficial visit to China from Jan. 10-18 at the invitation of Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Kim said that he was deeply impressed by the progress made in the southern part of China, which has undergone rapid change, and by the stirring reality of China. Kim mentioned that he would exert efforts with China to seek a way to overcome the obstacles in the six-party talks and to make progress in the talks.”
In its editorial, Rodong Shinmun contended (Jan. 20), “The maneuvers to infiltrate the bourgeois ideology and culture and the psychological schemes launched by the imperialists are means for aggression and interference.” It went on to say, “Whether the great self-reliant achievement of mankind makes victorious advancements or not depends on whether they are stopped, tacitly approved or permitted.”
In an article titled “With single-hearted devotion, whether there is rain or snow,” Rodong Shinmun stated (Jan. 21), “The contribution made by the ‘Ganggye spirit’ created by the people of Jagangdo (Yeon Hyeong-mook, former secretary of Jagangdo Provincial Party, died in October 2005) to the Seon-gun (Military First) revolution is enormous.” It further emphasized, “Now is the time that we are very much in need of such loyal subjects as Yeon Hyeong-mook.”
Outside North Korea
In a commentary, the Rodong Shinmun blasted (Jan. 16) the US, charging, “The United States has incurred us (the DPRK) significant losses by breaching the basic agreement reached between the DPRK and the US, and completely suspending the construction of light-water reactors.” It contended, “We (the DPRK) have every right to seek compensation for this.”
The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service insisted (Jan. 19), “As officially recognized by the world, we (the DPRK) have no human rights issues whatsoever.” It stressed, “It is contemptible on the part of the United States, the world leader in human rights violations, to speak of human rights in North Korea. We will not tolerate any act by the United States whatsoever that breaches the sovereignty and dignity of North Korea.”
The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service blasted (Jan. 20), “Japan is severely aggravating DPRK-Japanese relations by stirring up antagonism against our (the DPRK’s) republic in order to avoid settling the past and to come up with excuses to invade the south.”
Inter-Korean Issues
The Central Broadcasting Station propagandized (Jan. 18), “The entire people of Korea in the North, the South and overseas should forcefully launch the three patriotic movements for independent reunification, peace, and grand national solidarity as called for in the joint New Year editorial, and should further exalt the June 15 reunification era.”
The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service cautioned (Jan. 21), “The reunification movement organizations and the labor movement organizations in South Korea, including the Korean Teachers & Education Workers’ Union (Jeongyojo), must be well aware of the treacherous designs of the new conservative forces who are being manipulated behind the scenes by the United States, and must stop the maneuvers of the Liberal Teachers’ Union [a new teachers’ union to be established in March].”
