ROK National Intelligence Service
Inside North Korea
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 30), “Kim Jeong-il, accompanied by KPA generals Lee Myeong-su, Hyeon Cheol-hae and others, inspected KPA Unit 2651 (date unspecfied).” It went on to say, “Kim Jeong-il expressed satisfaction with the fact that all servicepersons were solidly prepared as regards political ideology and military technology, and urged soldiers to become the human bullets and bombs of the new century.” It further reported on Dec. 31 that Kim Jeong-il inspected KPA Unit 953 (date unspecified).
On the occasion of New Year’s Day, the Central Broadcasting Station published a joint editorial representing the party, the military and the youth guard, titled “Take Greater Strides Filled with Great Ambition and Confidence” (Jan. 1, 2006). It expounded on “giving fullest play to the superiority of North Korean-style socialism in politics, the military, the economy, culture and all other fields by once again spurring the advancement of the Seon-gun revolution as the task to conquer this year.”
Outside North Korea
The Rodong Shinmun contended (Dec. 27), “During the fifth six-party talks, we (the DPRK) called on the US to eliminate obstacles to the talks by lifting its sanctions, but the US did not take this into consideration.” It went on to say, “The US is the very thing that stands in the way of resolution of the nuclear issue and progress in the six-party talks.”
The Chosun Central News Agency reported (Dec. 27), “In a Dec. 26 meeting with North Korean Vice Premier Noh Du-cheol, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao emphasized that friendly cooperative relations between the two nations will be further developed.”
In a commentary titled “Political Commotion not Aimed at Reconciliation,” the Chosun Central News Agency stated, “The ultra-right conservative forces of Japan continue to take up the issue of ‘kidnappings’ in a contemptible manner.” It blasted Japan, saying, “If Japan indeed wishes a transition in the direction of DPRK-Japan relations that meets the expectations of the international community in the new century as well as of the people of the two nations, it must immediately end the kidnapping lunacy.”
Inter-Korean Issues
The Central Broadcasting Station emphasized (Dec. 27), “The reason for the indictment of Professor Kang Jeong-gu of Dongguk University is incomprehensible, and we strongly urge the judicial proceedings be suspended.”
On Dec. 30, the Pyongyang Broadcasting Service released a statement by the Central Committee of the Korean Federation of Education, Culture and Occupation denouncing the Grand National Party (GNP) of South Korea’s struggle to nullify legislation on private schools. It alleged that “the dispute over the objection to private school law by the Grand National Party, led by GNP Chair Park Keun-hye, is yet another sordid scheme staged in fear of the escalating anti-US and independence movement in South Korea.”
