India on Monday deplored the nuclear test conducted by North Korea, saying it jeopardized peace and stability in the region.
North Korea conducted the test in a tunnel dug on a mountain in its northeast coast.
New Delhi said that the test highlights the "dangers of clandestine proliferation."
"We are deeply concerned at the reported nuclear test conducted by DPR Korea," Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said.
"It is unfortunate that DPRK has conducted such a test in violation of its international commitments, jeopardizing peace, stability and security on the Korean Peninsula and in the region," he added.
He said New Delhi was monitoring the situation and was in close touch with several countries.
