Putin warns against provoking N.Korea to quit nuclear talks
12/07/2006 13:05 MOSCOW, July 12 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin cautioned Wednesday against provoking North Korea into pulling out of six-party talks on nuclear disarmament of the Korean Peninsula.
"We believe that we should put in place a system of guarantees to ensure international security, and I think that we are able to create such a system of guarantees. The North Koreans must not be provoked into withdrawing from the negotiations," he said in an interview with NBC.
"Russia will work toward achieving common approaches whatever they might be. Either in the form of a statement by the [UN] Security Council or a resolution, but we will seek to attain a common approach both on the North Korean problem and Iran's nuclear program," he said.
After being asked whether he trusted reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, Putin said: "You have asked me a question that should not be put to a person in my position. I do not trust anyone but myself. We base our actions on objective information, on our interests and the positions of our partners. This is objective and serious business."
