Internal Affairs
Chairman Kim Jong Il inspected Large Combined Unit 966 and Army Unit 147, accompanied by Ri Myong Su, Hyon Chol Hae, and Pak Jae Gyong, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on June 14.
The Central Broadcasting Station reported on June 14 that Kang Neung Su had been appointed as Minister of Culture. Minister Kang served as the Minister of Culture from Sep. 1999 to Sep. 2003, and holds concurrent positions of Vice Chairman of the Supreme People’s Assembly ( SPA ) and member of the 11th term of SPA , and Chairman of Kimilsungia and Kimjongilia Association.
The Pyongyang Broadcasting Station reported on June 11 that the construction of Urangchon , a large-scale hydroelectric power plant, is nearly completed. The construction of the plant started in 1988, but the construction had been dragged due to economic difficulties. The construction restarted after Chairman Kim Jong Il’s on-site guidance on Aug. 2000.
Inter-Korean Affairs
The June 15 Grand National Unification Festival was held from June 14 to 17 in Gwangju, Cheon-ra province, in which 32 South-North Korean governmental delegates, 295 South-North Korean civilian delegates, and 144 overseas Korean delegates participated.
Foreign Affairs
74-member foreign diplomatic corps including U.S. Ambassador Vershbow paid a visit to the Gaeseong Industrial Complex on June 12.
In addition, Ambassador Dorian Prince and fourteen staff members from European Commission visited the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
The Central Broadcasting Station reported on June 14 that a spokesperson from the Foreign Ministry released a statement urging Japan not to manipulate public opinions concerning the abduction issue.
