Nation-wide Campaign for Preservation of Land and Environment

Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- Great efforts have been directed to the preservation of land and environment throughout the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. As the DPRK Socialist Constitution stipulates in its Article 57, Chapter 3, the work of protecting land and environment is conducted on the principle that the state takes measures for the environment protection prior to the production, preserves and creates natural environment, prevents its pollution and provides the people with cultural and sanitary living environment and working conditions.
In recent years the Ministry of Land and Environment Preservation has established a strict work system in all provinces, cities and counties to control the amount of polluted materials coming out of industrial establishments and to regularly examine water of seas and rivers, soil and air.
Various activities for land preservation are being undertaken throughout the country. They include creation of land preservation forests, protection of sloping fields, improvement of rivers and streams and management of waterways.
Large-scale land rezoning projects are being conducted to prevent the land from being washed away and ensure its sustainable protection and to make an effective use of it. The completion of Kaechon-Thaesong Lake Waterway and Paekma-Cholsan Waterway, gravity-fed ones, marked a turning point in irrigation.
A nation-wide tree plantation campaign has been vigorously launched to convert the whole country into forests and gardens. Good species of trees were transplanted in tens of thousands of hectares throughout the country this spring.
Meanwhile, colorful events were held on June 5, the World Environment Day, according to the subject presented by the UN Environment Program.
A photo exhibition on achievements gained by the DPRK in the environmental protection was held and the film "Let's Turn out in Preservation of Land and Environment of Our Country" televised in Pyongyang.
And there was a picture contest of primary school- children for the purpose of giving them dreams and general knowledge of environment from the childhood.
