Internal Affairs
The Central Broadcasting Station, Pyongyang Broadcasting Station and Central TV as well as Chinese media such as CCTV and Xinhwa News Agency reported on Jan. 18 on Chairman Kim Jong-il’s unofficial visit to China from Jan. 10 to 18.
North Korea stressed the need for the education of class consciousness against the U.S. and for the development of the state-of-art technology at a central reporting meeting on the 60 th anniversary of the establishment of the Kim Il-sung Socialist Youth League.
Meetings were held to carry out the tasks suggested in the New Year’s Joint Editorial in all regions.
Inter-Korean Affairs
The Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland urged South Korea to take measures concerning the letter of indictment submitted by unconverted long-term prisoners and criticized South Korea for suppressing the Hanchongryun (Federation of South Korean University Students).
The Central Committee of the National Front announced the letter of accusations for the Grand National Party, a South Korean opposition party concerning its past history of sins from 5.16, a military coup by Park Jung-hee to the Kim Yong-sam government.
North Korea instigated rallies for the withdrawal of the U.S. troops stationed in South Korea, denouncing the reform in South Korean defense system as being in line with the U.S. hostile policy against North Korea and U.S.’ scheme on strengthening its armed forces.
Foreign Affairs
North Korea claimed that the U.S.’ financial transactions concerning North Korea’s alleged involvement in counterfeit notes does not comply with the international laws, calling for the changes in the U.S.’ policy directions. North Korea also criticized the U.S. for making use of the North Korean human rights issues and putting pressure on North Korea under the situations that the U.S. cannot demand for the prior abandonment of the North Korean nuclear issue in the Six-party talks.
North Korea , through the statement of Rodong Sinmun, claimed that the U.S. should be accountable for the termination of the construction of light water reactors and it is entitled to the right for the compensations made by the U.S.
