Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 19-20, Dec. 24-25), “Kim Jeong-il inspected a sub-unit under KPA Unit 946, a sub-unit under KPA Unit 531, gave field guidance at the new pig pedigree farm and meat cold storage, and attended a performance by the State Merited Chorus of KPA.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 23), “A national meeting marking the 14th anniversary of leader Kim Jeong-il’s assumption of office as supreme commander of the Korean People’s Army took place on Dec. 23 at the April 25 House of Culture.”


The Joseon Central News Agency reported (Dec. 23), “On Dec. 21, the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly formed a decision regarding the conferring of Kim Il Sung Youth Honor Prizes, orders and commemoration medals on the 58,232 participants in the torchlight procession held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea.”

Outside North Korea

Rodong Shinmun blasted (Dec. 20), “Following the passage of the human rights resolution against the DPRK by the EU under the supervision of the US, an international conference on North Korean human rights was recently staged, which is an extremely dangerous political conspiracy aimed at stifling the DPRK and a vicious act designed to drive the six-party talks to collapse.”


In a commentary, the Joseon Central News Agency contended (Dec. 23), “Rather than distorting the image of the DPRK by claiming that we (the DPRK) kidnapped a woman from a third country, Japan should be doing things that are helpful to improving DPRK-Japanese relations.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 24), “Vice premier of the DPRK cabinet Noh Du-cheol, on a visit to People’s Republic of China, and Vice Premier of the Chinese state council Zeng Peiyan signed an agreement on Dec. 24 regarding joint offshore oil exploitation.”

Inter-Korean Issues

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 20), “A conference for educators from North and South Korea was held in Gaeseong on Dec. 19 to implement the June 15 Joint Declaration. The two sides discussed measures to actively stage the reunification movement.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 25), “According to reports from South Korea’s KBS and MBC, the damage from recent heavy snowfall in several regions, including South and North Jeolla provinces, continues to rise.”
