Major Weekly Developments in North Korea (Dec. 5 - Dec. 11, 2005)

ROK National Intelligence Service

Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 6-8, Dec. 10), “Kim Jeong-il provided field guidance at the Bukjung Machine Complex and at the Bukjung Electrode Factory (dates unreported), and inspected KPA Unit 744, a women’s company under KPA Unit 5833, three revolutionary red flag company under KPA Unit 2191, and KPA Unit 667 (dates unreported).”

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service propagandized (Dec. 10), “2005 was a grand year of victory and glory that prominently displayed the dignity and mighty force of North Korea, guided by the Seongun (military-first) politics of Kim Jeong-il.”

Outside North Korea

Rodong Shinmun emphasized (Dec. 6), “The resumption of the six-party talks is absolutely impossible under present circumstances, with the United States shunning talks related to lifting the economic sanctions. It is our (the DPRK’s) stance that the six-party talks cannot be resumed amid the provocative sanctions of the United States.”

With regard to the statement made by Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe demanding that North Korea repay funds loaned for the construction of light-water reactors, the Pyongyang Broadcasting Service contended (Dec. 7), “It is us (the DPRK) that should be demanding compensation for losses resulting from the suspended construction of light-water reactors, and it is illogical for Japan to be demanding such compensation.”

In its editorial marking the World Human Rights Day, Rodong Shinmun blasted (Dec. 10), “The commotion surrounding human rights on the part of some Western powers, including the United States, is in essence aimed at overthrowing our system and replacing our regime - a prelude to an invasion.”

Inter-Korean Issues

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 8), “The North-South talks on sports was held in Gaeseong on Dec. 7, with Lee Dong-ho, vice chairman of the North Korea’s Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission, Bak Seong-in, vice chairman of South Korean Olympic Committee, and others participating. Discussions on the issue of forming a unified team comprising the North and the South were held.”

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Dec. 10), “The 3rd video meeting of separated families of the North and the South was held on Nov. 8-9, and participants exchanged long-unexpressed personal feelings by sharing photos of their families and relatives.”
