Outside North Korea

In a press conference with Joseon Central News Agency on Nov. 28, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contended, “The United States has destroyed the DPRK-US Basic Agreement and has incurred economic losses on us (the DPRK).” He said that the DPRK would demand US compensation for political and economic losses following the halt of the construction of light-water reactors.

In a Dec. 2 press conference with the Joseon Central News Agency, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “Lifting the financial sanctions is a prerequisite to progress in the six-party talks, and the United States should discuss and resolve this issue as expeditiously as possible through a separate bilateral meeting with North Korea.”

Inter-Korean Issues

In a statement issued on Dec. 2, the Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Fatherland blasted South Korean authorities, saying, “The passing in the cabinet meeting of a motion for the deployment of the Zaytun Division of ROK troops and the decision to introduce the motion in the National Assembly is an intolerable criminal act against the South Korean people.”

The Joseon Central News Agency reported (Dec. 2), “Kim Yeong-nam, chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, met with South Korean officials, including Shin Gi-nam, chairman of the organizing committee of the World Library and Information Congress 2006 to be held in Seoul.”

Chung Deok-gi, councilor of the Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, contended on Dec. 3, “Inter-Korean dialogues should be attended by a broad cross section of individuals, including authorities, representatives of political parties, social organizations, figures of various sectors of society and overseas compatriots, and various forms of dialogue and negotiations should be actively promoted.”

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service stated (Dec. 4), “National cooperation is the most systematic method and form of struggle reflecting our (the DPRK’s) reality and the requirements of the June 15 reunification era.” It further contended, “The attitude toward national cooperation is the touchstone dividing unification and anti-unification, independence and subordination, and patriotism and treachery.”
