Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 23), “The opening ceremony for the National Science and Technology Exhibition (Aug. 23-26) commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea was held at the Three Revolution Exhibition Hall on August 23, and was attended by Choi Tae-bok, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Noh Doo-cheol, vice premier of the cabinet, and Byeon Young-rip, chairman of the National Academy of Sciences.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 25), “The National Meeting of the Ministry of the People’s Armed Forces celebrating the 45th anniversary of the military-first leadership of Kim Jeong-il was held on August 24 at the April 25 House of Culture, and was attended by Cho Myeong-rok, director of the General Political Department of the Korean People’s Army; Kim Yeong-chun, KPA chief of general staff; and Kim Il-cheol, minister of the People’s Armed Forces.

Outside North Korea

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Station contended (Aug. 22), “The claim by the Japanese Foreign Ministry that the issue of post-war compensation is non-existent is a proclamation of the official stance of the Japanese government, and is a serious matter that cannot be overlooked under any circumstances.”


The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service emphasized (Aug. 23) with regard to the 3rd anniversary of Kim Jeong-il’s visit to the Far Eastern region of Russia, “The DPRK-Russian friendship has developed in various respects with the interest of the top leaders of the two countries. Continuing to strengthen and develop the DPRK-Russian friendship fully corresponds to the interests of the people in the two countries.”


The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service reported (Aug. 27), “The Chinese Foreign Ministry delegation led by Vice Minister Wu Dawei arrived in Pyongyang.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 28), “Foreign Minister Baek Nam-soon met with Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon of Thailand at the Mansudae Assembly Hall and concluded a memorandum of understanding on negotiation and cooperation.”

Inter-Korean Issues

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 24), “A performance by South Korean singer Cho Yong-pil took place on August 23 at the Chung Ju-young Gymnasium in Ryugyeong. Kim Yeong-nam, chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, met with the leading members of the visiting group, including Cho Yong-pil and Yoon Se-young, president of South Korean broadcast SBS, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall on August 24.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 26), “The delegation of the Democratic Workers’ Party of South Korea met with the Social Democratic Party of the DPRK on August 25 at the People’s Palace of Culture on August 25, where the two sides discussed matters of mutual interest, including the issue of reunification.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 28), “The separated family members of North Korea met individually with their South Korean counterparts following the group reunions.”
