Inside North Korea
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 16-17), “On August 15, Kim Jeong-il attended a performance by the Russian Beryozka Dancing Troupe and met with Konstantin Boriscovich Pulikovski, presidential envoy to the Far Eastern Region of the Russian Federation. On August 16, Kim Jeong-il met with Joo Dong-mun, president of the Washington Times Corporation and attended the mass gymnastic acrobatic displays and the Arirang art performance at the May 1 Stadium.”
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 17), “North Korea achieved outstanding results in the 3rd Asian Women’s Boxing Championships (Aug. 6-11), winning four gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal.”
The Central Broadcasting Station contended (Aug. 19), “The Korean People’s Army of today, under Kim Jeong-il’s military-first revolutionary leadership, has reinforced its military force in every way. Backed by a mighty political and ideological strength, the KPA has strong military deterrence that can repel, with a single blow, attacks by any kind of enemy.”
Outside North Korea
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 20), “The Chinese government’s economic and trade delegation headed by Chen Jian, assistant to the minister of Commerce, arrived in Pyongyang on August 20.”
The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service reported (Aug. 21), “Peace Mission 2005, the Russian-Chinese joint military exercise, was launched on August 18, and will be participated in by approximately 10 thousand servicemen.”
Inter-Korean Issues
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 15, Aug. 17), “The August 15 Grand National Festival for Independence, Peace and Reunification was held in Seoul (Aug. 14-16). Members of North Korean authorities as well as private delegations visited the National Memorial Board on August 14, and on August 16, Kim Gi-nam, vice chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, and his party visited Kim Dae-jung, the former president of South Korea, who is receiving medical treatment.”
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 20), “In accordance with the agreement reached at the 15th North-South Senior-Level Talks, the first meeting of the North-South Agricultural Cooperation Committee was held in Gaeseong from August 18 to 19, where the two sides adopted an agreement.”
