Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 3-4), “Following the inspection of the command of large combined KPA unit and unit 615 in the central sector at the front, Kim Jeong-il inspected a company of KPA unit 228 (date unreported).”


The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service propagandized (Aug. 2), “A commemorative meeting celebrating the 20th anniversary of the publication of Kim Jeong-il’s famous work titled Means for Developing Science and Technology was held at the People’s Palace of Culture on August 2, and was attended by WPK Secretary Choi Tae-bok, Vice Premier Noh Doo-cheol and Chairman of the National Academy of Sciences Byeon Yeong-rip (who delivered the report).”


The Central Broadcasting Station emphasized (Aug. 4), “Upholding the militant appeals of the Workers’ Party of Korea to decisively increase electricity production, electricity producers from various regions under the Ministry of Power and Coal Industries that are inciting the struggle for increased production are enthusiastically praising production these days on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the nation’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule.”

Outside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 4), “Minister of the People’s Armed Forces Kim Il-cheol (Vice Marshal) met with a delegation of external relations officials from the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense, headed by Major General Pham Taing Lun (팜 타잉 런), Director of External Relations of the Ministry of National Defense, and engaged in friendly dialogue (Aug. 4).”


In an article titled “An Epochal Event of Great Significance that Brilliantly Enhanced the History of the DPRK-Russian Friendship,” (Aug. 4) Rodong Shinmun called for the “strengthened development of the DPRK-Russian relationship in the new century” with relation to the 4th anniversary of the signing of the DPRK-Russia Moscow Declaration (Pyongyang Broadcasting Service).”


Quoting an interview with the General Federation of Trade Unions (Aug. 6), the Central Broadcasting Station alleged, “Japan is severely aggravating DPRK-Japanese relations by referring to the kidnapping incident with the objective of evading apologizing and providing compensation for its crimes of the past, while moving toward become a large military power.”

Inter-Korean Issues

The Central Broadcasting Station emphasized (Aug. 1), “The more foreign forces strain to launch aggressive maneuvers against reunification, the more the Korean people in the North, South and overseas must demonstrate the true sense of compatriotism from a national perspective.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Aug. 4), “The second round of Joint Chairmen’s Meeting of the Preparatory Committee in the United States for the Joint Functions of North, South and Overseas Koreans for the Implementation of the June 15 Joint Declaration took place on July 23 in Los Angeles, USA, and was attended by Chairman of the Preparatory Committee in the United States Moon Dong-hwan, joint chairmen, the secretary general and others.”


The Secretariat of the DPRK’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland propagandized in its bulletin no. 906 (Aug. 6), “We must forcefully raise the tide of the anti-US struggle in order to drive out the US imperialists this year, which marks the 60th year of the US occupation of South Korea (Pyongyang Broadcasting Service).”
