Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 25), “Kim Jeong-il, accompanied by the Workers’ Party of Korea’s First Vice Department Director Lee Jae-il and Vice Department Director Hwang Byeong-seo, inspected KPA unit 503 (date unreported).”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 26), “An oratorical meeting of youths and students of Pyongyang City in honor of the 52nd anniversary of victory in the Fatherland Liberation War was held at Youth Central Hall (July 25) and was attended by WPK Secretary Kim Joong-rin. In addition, a loyal meeting of the servicemen of the Korean People’s Army took place (July 26), attended by Chief of the KPA General Staff Kim Yeong-chun, Minister of Defense Kim Il-cheol, and others.”

Outside North Korea

In a commentary titled “The Manifestation of Militarist Ambition,” Rodong Shinmun stated, “If Japan is genuinely interested in the peace and security of the world, it should not possess a combatant military force wearing the guise of a self-defense force.” (July 28, Central Broadcasting Station)


A spokesperson for the DPRK’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland emphasized in a statement (July 29) with regards to the centennial anniversary of the signing of the Katsura-Taft Secret Agreement, “The United States and Japan must renounce aggressive maneuvers aimed at us (the DPRK) at once.” (Central Broadcasting Station)


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 31), “Foreign Minister Paek Nam-sun expressed in a speech at the ARF Conference that in the event the nuclear issue is resolved, North Korea will once again join the NPT, and consent to inspections by the IAEA.”

Inter-Korean Issues

Chung Deok-gi, Chief Councilor of DPRK’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, asserted in a statement titled “Diplomatic Principle of the Federal State” that “all the treaties and conventions unilaterally concluded with other nations prior to the reunification of the nation that go against the common interests of our people, such as military treaties, must be abolished.” (July 26, Pyongyang Broadcasting Service)


In a statement released by a spokesperson of DPRK’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland (July 30), North Korea propagandized the “anti-US struggle,” asserting that the demonstrations by South Korean civic groups such as the Joint Countermeasures Committee Struggling for the Banishment of US Soldiers calling for the demolition of the statue of US General Douglas MacArthur is “justifiable on all grounds.” (Pyongyang Broadcasting Service)


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 31), “The delegations of North and South Koreans and Koreans residing overseas issued a joint press release collectively produced during the working-level meeting of the Preparatory Committee for Joint Functions of the August 15 Grand National Festival (July 28-30, Gaeseong) in which they agreed to hold the Grand March for Unification, the National Rally and the North-South Unification Football Match from August 14-17.”
