Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 18, July 20-24), “Kim Jeong-il inspected the general food processing plant under KPA unit 534; KPA unit 937; the command of KPA unit 118; KPA unit 2653; the saltworks at Wonsan Bay; and the artillery company under KPA unit 287 (date unreported).”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 22), “As of August 3, the satellite reception frequency for the Central TV will be changed from 3424.5 MHz to 3664.6 MHz, and until August 2, the signal will be relayed simultaneously at both the old frequency and the new frequency.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 24), “The secretary and the members of the Workers’ Party of Korea as well as members of the central government ministries and provincial, municipal and county parties provided field guidance at several sites, including the Feb. 8 Allied Vinylon Enterprise, Heungnam Pharmaceutical Plant, the general food processing plant under KPA unit 534, and the saltworks at Wonsan Bay.”

Outside North Korea

With regard to Japan’s attempts to gain permanent membership in the UN Security Council, the Pyongyang Broadcasting Service asserted (July 20), “The international community should under no circumstances allow this unless Japan frankly acknowledges its crimes of the past and makes amends for them.”


In a statement issued by a spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 22, North Korea declared, “In the event the armistice on the Korean peninsula shifts towards a peace treaty, both the hostile policy of the United States against North Korea and nuclear threats will vanish, which would naturally lead to the denuclearization of the peninsula.” (Pyongyang Broadcasting Service)


With regard to the second terrorist attack in London, the Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 24), “Another series of explosions took place in London, and the terrorism scare is expanding across Europe.”

Inter-Korean Issues

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 19), “A meeting of students from North and South Korea to implement the June 15 Joint Declaration and realize national cooperation toward peace and against war was held at the Mt. Geumgang resort July 17-18.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 19), “In accordance with the agreement reached at the 15th inter-Korean ministerial talks as well as working-level contacts between the North and South Korean Red Cross, the ceremony for linking optical fiber transmission lines (between Munsan and Gaeseong) to enable ‘video reunions’ of separated families in North and South Korea took place on July 18 at the Military Demarcation Line in the demilitarized zone.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 21), “The National Writers’ Rally to Implement the June 15 Joint Declaration was held on July 20 at the People’s Palace of Culture, and was attended by Vice Premier Noh Doo-cheol, Chairman of the General Federation of Korean Literature and Arts Unions Kim Jeong-ho, a delegation from South Korea, and a delegation of Korean writers residing in Japan.”
