Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 5), “Kim Jeong-il, accompanied by Workers’ Party of Korea Secretaries Choe Tae-bok, Kim Gook-tae, and Kim Gi-nam and First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Seok-ju, enjoyed a performance by Russia’s ‘State Academic Ensemble of Popular Dance,’ the Moiseyev Dance Company, on July 4 at the Mansudae Art Theater.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 5), “The mass rally of the Ministry of the People’s Armed Forces took place at the April 25 House of Culture on July 4, and was attended by Director of the KPA General Political Department Cho Myeong-rok, Chief of the General Staff of the KPA Kim Yeong-chun, and others.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 8), “On the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the demise of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jeong-il visited Geumsusan Memorial Palace at midnight on July 8, accompanied by Vice Chairman of the National Defense Commission Yeon Hyeong-mook, Chief of the General Staff of the KPA Kim Yeong-chun, Minister of the People’s Armed Forces Kim Il-cheol and other members of the operational command of the national command authority. Kim offered a wreath in the name of the Central Committee and the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea.”

Outside North Korea

In a news commentary (July 6), the Central Broadcasting Station blasted Japanese Emperor Akihito’s visit to Saipan, labeling it “an intolerable challenge to peace and to mankind.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (July 9), “DPRK Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Gye-gwan met with US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill in Beijing during his visit to China on July 9. Both sides agreed to commence the fourth round of six-party talks in the week of July 25.”


A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on July 10, “Although the resumption of the six-party talks itself is significant, most essential is in-depth discussion of the means for achieving denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and realizing practical progress.” (Central Broadcasting Station)

Inter-Korean Issues

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service stated (July 4), “The publication of the July 4 Joint Declaration was a major feat that provided the fundamental principles and means for the grand undertaking of reunification and that created new momentum in the movement toward reunification of the fatherland.”


The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service reported (July 5), “The principle of national independence is the very principle of pioneering the destiny of our people, which we must all stoutly defend and fully achieve in the struggle for reunification of the fatherland.”
