Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (May 30-June 2), “Kim Jeong-il inspected the 9th squad under army unit 205, army unit 3407, the Three Revolution Red Flag Squadron under army unit 471, the Three Revolution Red Flag Female Squadron under army unit 578, army unit 992, and others, and called for strengthened combat capabilities.” (Date and accompanying persons unreported)

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (May 31), “The Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly announced a government ordinance (May 30) dividing the Ministry of Metal and Machine-Building Industries into the newly established Ministry of Metals Industry and the Ministry of Machine-Building Industries.”


The Central Broadcasting Station reported (June 4), “As of June 3, rice transplanting performance across the nation has exceeded 70% of all rice paddies, excluding areas for the cultivation of dry-field farming crops.”

Outside North Korea

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service urged (May 31), “The Japanese authorities must bear responsibility for the immense crimes of the past in which they forcibly drafted the Korean people into labor, and must make due compensation."


The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service reported (June 2), “The ceremony for the issuance of joint postage stamps between North Korea and Russia was held on June 1 at the Joseon Stamp Exhibition Hall, and was attended by Vice Minister Park Myeong-cheol of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and President Huh Seong-gil of the North Korea Stamp Corporation, as well as workers of the North Korea Stamp Corporation.”


With regard to the press conference held by US President Bush (May 31), a spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry said on June 3, “We will closely observe President Bush’s use of ‘Mister’ when he referred to our leader, Kim Jeong-il.” The spokesperson went on to say, “this would contribute to creating an atmosphere conducive to the six-party talks.” (Pyongyang Broadcasting Service)

Inter-Korean Issues

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service reported (June 4), “Chairman Baek Nak-cheong of South Korea’s Preparatory Committee for Joint Functions of the North, the South and Overseas Koreans to Implement the June 15 Joint Declaration and his delegation arrived in Pyongyang on June 4.”
