Major Weekly Developments in North Korea (Mar. 28 - Apr. 3, 2005)
ROK National Intelligence Service
Inside North Korea
The Director of the State Hygiene Inspection Institute of the North Korean Ministry of Public Health, appearing on Central Broadcasting Television on March 31, emphasized, “Since the bird influenza is a disease transmitted to humans from wild birds or poultry, we must be fully aware of the symptoms of the contamination in both the birds and humans.”
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (April 1), “The Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly decided (Mar. 31) to convene the 3rd Conference of the 11th Session on April 11, 2005 in Pyongyang.”
In a press conference held at Pyongyang’s Yanggakdo Hotel on April 1, the Acting Secretary General of the North Korean Football Association charged, “In the Asian region qualifying matches for the 2006 World Cup Germany played against Bahrain and Iran, the referees made biased decisions.”
Outside North Korea
The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service lashed out (Mar. 29) at US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, charging, “She infused the fever of war to invade North Korea as she, on her first itinerary in Seoul, visited the command center of the Korean and US forces to inspect mock training being conducted by the pro-war US forces.”
In a press conference held on March 31, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the preposterous claim, “Now that we [DPRK] have become a nation possessing a nuclear arsenal, the six-party talks should become talks in which arms reduction is sought where the participating nations can resolve the issues on an equal stance, and measures should be pursued to liquidate the threats of nuclear war not only on the Korean peninsula but also in the entire Northeast Asian region.”
With regard to the statement (Mar. 31) by Hakubun Shimomura, Japan’s Senior Vice Minister of Education, the Pyongyang Broadcasting Service lashed out, saying, “This explicitly demonstrates how Japan is clinging to its indiscriminate efforts to change its history for a better version.”
Inter-Korean Issues
The Central Broadcasting Station made the farfetched claim (April 2), “The Jeju People’s Uprising of April 3, 1948 was an explosion of the rage of the South Korean people against the conspiracies and maneuvers by US imperialists to keep our people separated eternally as well as an eruption of the aspirations of the South Korean people to achieve reunification on their own.”
