ROK National Intelligence Service
Inside North Korea
Following the inspection of the military base of the 347th battalion of the People’s Army, accompanied by Generals Lee Myeong-su, Hyeon Cheol-hae and Pak Jae-gyeong (specific date unreported), Kim Jong-il paid an inspection visit to the pig farm at the military base of the 966th battalion of the People’s Army (date unreported), where he ordered “the strengthening of combat capabilities and the introduction of advanced technology.” (Jan. 28-Jan. 29, Central Broadcasting Station)
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Jan. 30), “For the fulfillment of this year’s joint editorial, over one million young men are making revolutionary improvements in significant sectors such as agriculture, the major frontline for the development of the socialist economy, as well as in the field of construction for the establishment of large-scale hydraulic power plants, etc.”
The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Jan. 30) that “the Ministry of Labor is exerting efforts in the form of projects (lectures, published reports, revolutionary books, etc) to establish a revolutionary learning environment for our workers in order to greet the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Party as well as the nation’s liberation from Japanese rule in the grand festival of the victors.”
Outside North Korea
The Korea News Service released a memorandum (Jan. 24) stating, “The result of tests on the remains of ‘Megumi Yokota’, a Japanese abducted to North Korea, is the fabrication of ultra-rightists who oppose us (North Korea) as well as impure elements who attempt to achieve political objectives by conspiring with them.”
In a statement by the spokesperson of the Democratic Women’s Alliance, Pyongyang Broadcasting Service announced (Jan. 30), “The recent anti-DPRK upheaval staged by Japan is a scheme to cover up its anti-humanity crimes of the past and to avoid efforts towards liquidation.” It further stated, “All the women of Joseon will make sure that Japan pays for its crimes of the past one hundred years.”
Pyongyang Broadcasting Service said, “The American imperialists who have manipulated the human rights laws of North Korea have gone as far as planning to send a human rights special envoy to North Korea and are launching high-powered human rights offensives against the DPRK.” It further charged, “These challenges to the DPRK aimed at overthrowing our [North Korea’s] system.”
Inter-Korean Issues
In a report by the Naval Command of the People’s Army, the Central Broadcasting Station made the preposterous claim that South Korean naval vessels infringed on the Northern Limit Line (NLL) and condemned this as “an act nullifying the agreements reached at the meetings of the generals.”
With regard to the 14th anniversary of the establishment of the North Korean headquarters of the Pan-Korean Alliance for National Reunification, Pyongyang Broadcasting Service urged support (Jan. 25) of the so-called “three goals for the unification of the fatherland as well as revitalization of the unification movement.”
