Major Weekly Developments in North Korea (Jan. 10 - Jan. 16, 2005)

ROK National Intelligence Service

Inside North Korea

Attended by Jeon Byeong-ho, Lee Yong-cheol and Ju Gyu-chang, Kim Jong-il visited the “Bukjung Machinery Complex” (specific date unreported) and then made a tour of the “September Steel Making Complex” and “Nakwon Machinery Complex” (specific date unreported) to order the “modernization/scientific advancement of production.” (Jan.13, Jan.14 and Jan.15, Central Broadcasting Station)

Citing the Rodong Shinmun editorial titled “Let’s energetically spur the New Year’s grand march by keeping the victor’s pride high”, the Central Broadcasting Station (Jan.10) reported "there is nothing we cannot accomplish if we promote the power of unity to the utmost possible extent and fully mobilize every economic potential of the nation.”

Outside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station (Jan. 14) reported "a U.S. Congress delegation, which arrived in our country on January 11 and departed on January 14, exchanged frank and in-depth views on outstanding issues between the DPRK and U.S. including the nuclear issue and six-party talks."

The Democratic Korea contended that "notwithstanding the DPRK-Japan summit and the Pyongyang Declaration aimed at bringing the two nations closer, their bilateral relations have been deteriorating continuously." It also maintained that "the relations between the two countries today have degenerated into the worst crisis ever since the war." (Jan. 13, Pyongyang Broadcasting Service)

Inter-Korean Issues

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (Jan.10) lashed out at the South Korean government, arguing that "the South Korean government’s attempt to designate us (DPRK) as its archenemy in its national defense white paper to be published this month by flatly describing us as the “most important menace” constitutes a treacherous act that runs counter to the June 15 Joint Declaration."

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Service (Jan.12) criticized as a tricky propaganda that "the U.S. imperialist pressure to dispatch South Korean forces to Iraq and the South Korean government’s subservient anti-nationalistic act to succumb to such pressure drove South Korean soldiers into Iraq, which has caused a nightmare as during the Vietnam War and sparked fears of terrorism in the entire South Korean society.”
