DPRK Delegate Refers to Peaceful Use of Space

Korean Central News Agency of DPRK via Korea News Service (KNS)

Pyongyang, October 27 (KCNA) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea will positively promote the cooperation and exchange with the international community including the UN and different countries of the world and develop the independent space science and technology in the field of peaceful use of the space. A DPRK delegate said this in his speech during the discussion on the agenda item "The international cooperation in the peaceful use of the space" at the meeting of the 4th committee of the 60th UN General Assembly on Oct. 19.
He noted that the space should not become someone's monopoly, adding that if the universe is to become a peaceful one conducive to promoting the welfare of humankind it is important to reject the monopolistic practices in the space development and enable all countries to freely participate in it on an equal footing.
    He went on:
The successes achieved in the space development should be shared for the well-being of all countries and peoples. It is necessary to categorically reject any attempt to disturb and control the developing countries' activities for the space development and monopolize the space in a bid to retain a technological edge. It is also necessary to stand firm against any attempt to militarize the space if it is to become a peaceful one conducive to the well-being of mankind. The DPRK assails all moves to turn the space into a military base and battle site against the sovereign states and calls for building an international legal mechanism for preventing the space militarization as early as possible, he asserted.
