Internal Affairs
Chairman Kim Jong-il, accompanied by Premier Park Bong-ju, Park Nam-ki director of the central committee of the (North) Korean Workers’ Party (KWP) and Lee Jae-il, first deputy director of the central committee of the KWP, gave on-site directions at the Daean Friendship Glass Factory which had been constructed with the support of the Chinese government’s grants, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on October 5.
Together with secretaries of the KWP, Choi Tae-bok, Kim Kuk-tae and Kim Ki-nam, and Vice Minister of the North Korean Foreign Ministry Kang Suk-ju, Chairman Kim-Jong-il enjoyed a performance played by the State Academy ensemble of the Russian Ministry of Interior.
On the occasion of the 60 th anniversary of the founding of the KWP, the large-scale maintenance work in downtown Pyongyang was done including installing all propaganda boards and decorating with ‘Kim Jong-il flowers’. The celebrative atmosphere was elated by holding regional events as well as ones related to all fields.
Delivering news on the completion and operation of all industrial facilities, North Korea advertised the news as achievements which made the 60 th anniversary of the founding of the KWP brilliant.
The Central Broadcasting Station reported on October 1 that the constructions of the Busan Potato Starch Factory, the February 25 Mine and the second stage of the Susung Stream Plant No. 1-5 had been completed. According to the Central Broadcasting Station and the Pyongyang Broadcasting Station on October 3, the ceremony for the completion of the waterway from Baekma to Cheolsan was held. The ceremony to start operation at the Hwanghae Steel Complex Enterprise and the ceremony for the completion of the Yongwon Plant Bank were held, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on October 6.
The Rodong daily, through its editorial on October 1, defined that the history of the (North) Korean Workers’ Party was equivalent to that of the history of admired General Kim Il-sung’s great revolutionary activities and praised the Party’s achievements as ones made by General Kim Il-sung and his son Kim Jong-il.
The commemorative event on the anniversary of the National Foundation Day was held in front of Dankun’s (Korea’s founding father in the myth) Mausoleum with related people including Kim Young-dae, chairman of the National Reconciliation Council attending, according to the Central Broadcasting Station and the Pyongyang Broadcasting Station on October 3.
Inter-Korean Affairs
The Committee for the Peaceful Unification of the Fatherland’s spokesman, through its commentary on September 30, denounced the re-composition of the inter-Korean relations development special committee by the (South) Korean National Assembly, saying that the main purpose behind the re-composition was to form obstacles to inter-Korean cooperative projects.
The remains of Chung Soon-taek were buried at a mausoleum for compatriots on September 30 and his funeral service was held on October 4, according to the Central Broadcasting Services on October 5.
The first Inter-Korean Consultative Meeting on Maritime Transportation Cooperation was held in Gaeseong from September 29 to 30 to discuss matters of mutual concerns in inter-Korean maritime transportation fields.
On the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the ROK -U.S Mutual Defense Agreement which was reached on October 1, 1953, North Korea urged South Korea to scrap the agreement, claiming that the agreement would interrupt the peace process and unification on the Korean Peninsula.
Foreign Affairs
Related figures from foreign countries visited North Korea in order to attend celebrative events in commemoration of the founding of the KWP, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on October 6 and 7. The list of visitors included workers from the Geumkang Insurance Corporation under Chongryun (the General Association of North Korean Residents in Japan), Kim Cheol, anti-Japanese revolutionary activist residing in China and his family, a Cuba Communist Party delegation and a delegation from the New Zealand North Korean Resident Association.
A Mongolia delegation from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture headed by Vice Minister Cherendorej Kanghoyague paid a visit to North Korea on October 3, according to the Pyongyang Broadcasting Station on October 5.
Kim Young-jae Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade led a delegation to visit Sahalin. According to the Itartass News Agency on October 5, North Korea and Sahalin in Russia reached the agreement on forming a joint working-level association on mutual economic cooperation and trade.
The Rodong Daily, through its commentary under the title that the most basic thing among the basics is trust-building on October 4, emphasized that trust-building is a key to solving problems, such as the North Korean nuclear problem, in the relations between North Korea and the U.S.
