Chairman Kim Jong-il visited and observed the farm (no.1116) under the army unit 534, accompanied by Prime Minister Park Bong-ju, Agricultural Minister Lee Kyung-sik, and General Lee Myung-soo, Hyun Cheol-hae and Park Jae-kyung, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Sept. 1.
The Ministry of the People’s Armed Forces held the commemorative briefing session on the 45 th anniversary of the initiation of Kim Jong-il’s leading the military-first revolution beginning on Aug. 25, 1960 on Aug.24, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug. 25.
Several commemorative events such as a picnic party for adolescents were held and adolescents’ roles were stressed in the process of the protection of the regime and economic construction on the 14 th anniversary of the Youth Day on Aug.28, according to the Central Broadcasting Station and the Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug. 28.
The ceremony of igniting a smelting furnace in the Daean Friendly Glass Factory was held and some facilities went into operation on Aug.22, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug. 23 and 30.
Musan mine complex enterprises rebuilt a duck farm and expanded it into a modern complex farm, according to the Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug. 18.
The construction of the waterway tunnel from Baekma to Cheolsan has been completed, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug. 28.
The ‘Nationwide Education Program Competition’ was held in the Pyongyang College of Science from Aug. 20 to 26 with students from colleges, professional colleges and middle schools attending, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug. 27.
The ‘Nationwide Science and Technology Expo’ on the 60 th anniversary of the Party establishment was held in the Three Revolution Exhibition Hall from Aug. 23 to 26, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug.23.
The 8 th round of the ‘Jongil Peak Prize Nationwide Taekwondo Championship’ was held in the Taekwondo Hall from Aug. 22 to 26, according to the Central Broadcasting Station and Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug. 22.
The 19 th round of the ‘Pyongyang International Ping-pong Invitation Games’ closed its curtain on Aug. 22, after starting in the Ping-pong Stadium on the Cheongchun (youth) street in Pyongyang on Aug. 18, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug.23.
Inter-Korean Affairs
South Korea and North Korea held the first round of the Inter-Korean Agricultural Cooperation Committee in Gaeseong from Aug. 18 to 19 and adopted a seven-point agreement, including the operation of a model cooperative farm.
South Korea and North Korea held the 6 th round of the Inter-Korean Red Cross Talks at Mt. Geumgang from Aug.23 to 25 and discussed the several issues, such as the confirmation of the fates and whereabouts of the missing during the June 25 war and the following periods.
The 11 th round of the reunions between separated families was held at Mt.Geumgang from Aug. 26 to 31. During the first session from Aug. 26 to 28, 145 South Koreans met their 229 family members residing in North Korea and 100 North Koreans met 434 South Korean family members and relatives during the second session from Aug. 29 to 31.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the Mt.Geumgang Reunion Center was held at the site for the Center in Onjeong-ri on Aug. 31.
The South Korean Singer, Cho Yong-phil’s concert, was held at the Ryukyung Jung Joo-young Stadium on Aug. 23, according to the Central Broadcasting Station and Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug. 24.
The Democratic Labor Party ( DLP )’s delegation, including president Kim Hye-kyung paid a visit to North Korea at the invitation of (North) Korean Social Democratic Party from Aug 23 to 27, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug.23 and 27. The DLP ’s president held the meeting with her North Korean counterpart and a talk with Kim Yong-nam, chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly on Aug.25 respectively. And they also went sightseeing in the historical site of the Sook (wormwood) Island Revolution.
Choi Mun Soon, president of the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation and Lee Hak yoo, secretary general of the committee in memory of the pastor Son Jung-do visited North Korea from Aug. 27 to 31 and held a talk with Kim Yong-nam, according to the Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug. 27 and Aug.31.
124 North Korean supporters consisting of students and adolescents and twenty North Korean athletes participated in the 16 th round of the Asian Athletics Championships which was held from Sep. 1 to 4, according to the Central Broadcasting Station and the Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug. 31.
The spokesperson for the Committee for the Peaceful Unification of the Fatherland, through the press conference on Aug. 19, criticized the U.S for exhorting South Korea to develop a ‘Conceptual Plan-5029’ into the action plan, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug. 20.
Foreign Affairs
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through an interview with the Korean Central News Agency on Aug.29, announced that the 4 th round of the six-party talks will be resumed on the week beginning on Sep. 12, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug. 29.
On Aug.13, the spokesman of the North Korean mission at Panmunjom released the statement on criticizing Ulchi Lens Focus, a joint military exercise between South Korean and U.S armies which took place from Aug. 22 to Sep.2.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the press conference on Aug. 24, related the military exercise with the six-party talks and denounced it as a provocative war game targeted at North Korea , a U.S dialogue partner at the six-party talks, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug. 25.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry delegation headed by Wu Dawei, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister visited North Korea from Aug. 27 to 29, according to the Central Broadcasting Station and the Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug. 27 and 29.
The U.S Congress delegation headed by James Leach, chairman of a U.S House Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, paid a visit to North Korea on Aug. 30, according to the Central Broadcasting Station and the Pyongyang Central Services on Aug. 30.
Thai Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon headed the Thai delegation, visiting North Korea from Aug.27 to 30. The Foreign Minister signed the MOU on the negotiations and cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and held a talk with Yang Hyung-seop, vice-chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, according to the Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug. 27 and 28.
Zambia ’s government delegation headed by Lupando Mwape, Vice President paid a visit to North Korea from Aug. 23 to 27. They held a talk with Yang Hyung-seop, vice-chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly and went sightseeing in the Juche Tower , according to the Central Broadcasting Station on Aug. 23 and 27.
The North Korean delegation on trade and economy headed by Lim Kyung-man, Minister of Foreign Trade, departed to attend the ‘Northeast Asia Investment Expo’ in Jilin, China on Aug.31, according to the Central Broadcasting Station and the Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug.31.
The North Korean delegation on public health headed by Kim Soo-hak, Minister of Public Health, departed for Sri Lanka to attend the 23 th round of the WHO Ministerial meeting in Southeast Asia regions on Aug. 30, according to the Pyongyang Broadcasting Services on Aug. 30.
