1st Meeting of Panel for North-South Cooperation in Fisheries Opened

Kaesong, July 27 (KCNA) -- The 1st meeting of the panel for north-south cooperation in fisheries took place in Kaesong from July 25 to 27 in accordance with the agreement of the 10th meeting of the North-South Committee for the Promotion of Economic Cooperation. At the meeting both sides discussed proposals for cooperation in fisheries to ensure peace and the common interests of fishermen of the north and the south in the West Sea according to the basic spirit of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration and adopted an agreement of the 1st meeting of the panel for north-south cooperation in fisheries.
Clarified in the agreement are articles concerning cooperation in fisheries between the north and the south -- both sides shall set a certain water area of the West Sea to carry on joint fishing on the principle of ensuring peace and common interests, the water area of joint fishing and date of joint fishing shall be set according to an agreement at the north-south military authority talks, both sides shall agree and decide on the period of fishing, the number of fishing boats, the use of fishing tackle and charges for fishing in piscary, both sides shall cooperate with each other in controlling the incoming of illegal fishing boats, not those of both sides, to prevent their fishing, concrete issues of cooperation in processing marine products and circulation shall be discussed at a working-level contact for cooperation in fisheries between the north and the south, and both sides shall jointly promote the development of good breeds to increase marine products and conduct technical exchange to this end and cooperate with each other in advancing into fishing grounds of a third country.
Both sides agreed to consult and set the date and place of their working-level contact for cooperation in fisheries in the way of documentary exchange.
