June 15 Joint Declaration, Fruit of Independent Reunification Idea
Korean Central News Agency of DPRK via Korea News Service (KNS)
Pyongyang, June 9 (KCNA) -- The cause of national reunification of the Korean people has vigorously advanced under the banner of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration, declaration for the independent reunification common to the nation. The relations of confrontation and antagonism between the north and south of Korea which had lasted for more than a half century have turned into ones of dialogue, negotiation, cooperation and exchange. And the reunification movement has developed on to a new high stage of opening the way for the independent reunification with national cooperation under the idea of "By our nation itself".
This is entirely attributable to the wise guidance of leader Kim Jong Il, who has regarded the country's reunification as his lifelong mission and devoted his all to it.
In the middle of October Juche 84 (1995) he reclarified his resolve to achieve national reunification without fail according to the last instructions of President Kim Il Sung. He has since then formulated the three principles for national reunification, the ten-point programme for the great unity of the entire nation and the proposal for founding the Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo, which were put forward by the President, into the three-point charter for national reunification, thus providing a firm foundation for reunification.
Kim Jong Il also authored a number of works including "Let Us Carry Out the Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung's Instructions for National Reunification" (August 1997)and "Let Us Reunify the Country Independently and Peacefully through the Great Unity of the Entire Nation" (April 1998) to light the road ahead of the reunification movement.
His idea of the great national unity expounds that he would unite with those who want national reunification and advance shoulder to shoulder with them for the reunification cause, regardless of their past career. This magnetic idea has enjoyed positive support from the political parties and groups and people of all walks of life in south Korea and helped them turn out in the patriotic efforts for reunification.
He provided the north-south summit in June 2000, the first of its kind in the history of national division, and said that it would be good for the summit to publish a joint declaration giving hope for national reunification and optimism for the future to the 70 million fellow countrymen.
In a matter of 50 hours of the Pyongyang summit, his energetic efforts resulted in making a breakthrough in the 55-year long history of division and publishing the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration, programme of the independent reunification common to the nation.
