Scientists Out to Fulfill New Year's Tasks

    Pyongyang, January 13 (KCNA) -- The scientists of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, in response to the joint New Year editorial of the newspapers Rodong Sinmun, Josoninmingun and Chongnyonjonwi, are intensifying research for production increase and economic development. President of the Academy of Sciences Pyon Yong Rip, in an interview with KCNA, said that the scientists and technicians of the country are full of resolution to give a powerful stimulus to a great surge for the Songun revolution by considerably raising their role in accordance with the present demand of the development of the economic science and technology in the 21st century.
    Officials and scientists of the Academy of Agricultural Science are making efforts to fully support agriculture, the main front of socialist economic construction this year, with science and technology, he said, and continued:
    While concentrating all efforts on the introduction of the scientific farming methods to radically increase the grain production, they have already finished preparations for a regular commanding system necessary for scientific farming throughout the country.
    Subsidiary institutes have selected areas suitable for newly bred seeds and taken measures for cultivating them on a scientific and technical basis according to their characteristics. They have also made research in new varieties and their cultivation. Meanwhile, they have made efforts to choose right crops on right soil for two crops a year and establish their cultivation system and intensified research for preventing potato epidemic.
    Officials and scientists of the Branch Academy of Biological Science under the Academy of Sciences are now working hard to contribute to the grain production this year with successes in scientific and technological research.
    Besides, the branch academies of coal and light industries and railways and the Hamhung Branch Academy are making strenuous efforts to solve scientific and technological issues concerning the development of the national economy and the improvement of the people's living.
    Scientists of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, the Institute of Control Machinery and other institutes of the applied science field are engaged in research for modernizing the national economy with up-to-date technology.
