Implementation of June 15 Joint Declaration Called for

    Pyongyang, January 13 (KCNA) -- The joint New Year editorial earnestly called upon all the Koreans in the north, the south and abroad to bring about a new phase in the cause of the country's reunification under the uplifted banner of the June 15 joint declaration this year. Rodong Sinmun Thursday in a signed article carried in this regard says this reflects the unanimous desire and will of the whole Korean nation to achieve a final victory in the cause of reunification in the near future by invariably upholding the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration as a milestone for the country's reunification and energetically pushing ahead with the work to implement the joint declaration by the concerted efforts of the Korean nation.

    The basic spirit of the joint declaration is to independently reunify the country by the concerted efforts of our nation responsible for the settlement of the issue.
    The issue of Korea's reunification will be reduced to a plaything of the outside aggressor forces and the history of national division will not be terminated unless the Korean nation holds fast to the principle of independence. This is the lesson taught by the 60-year-long history of the fierce struggle waged against the outside forces that have been hell-bent on all sorts of vicious separatist moves to fish in troubled waters in the confrontation between the north and the south, displeased with any movement for Korea's reunification.
    In the June 15 joint declaration the north and the south of Korea recognized common points in the north-proposed low-level federation and the south-proposed confederation and agreed to work for reunification in that direction. This indicates the way of settling the issue of the country's reunification peacefully and most smoothly by the concerted efforts of the Koreans.
    The joint declaration also paves a wide avenue for accomplishing the cause of reunification as it comprehensively deals with all matters of achieving national reconciliation and unity and the country's reunification including the need to implement multi-faceted cooperation and exchange between the north and the south, ensure a balanced development of national economy and build mutual confidence.
    All the fellow countrymen in the north, the south and overseas should give further spurs to the work to implement the declaration this year as they are called upon to do so in the editorial and thus glorify the era of independence and reunification.
