Major Weekly Developments in North Korea (November 15 - 21, 2004)

ROK National Intelligence Service

Inside North Korea

Accompanied by Lee Myeong-su, Hyeon Cheol-hae, Park Jae-gyeong and others, Kim Jeong-il visited (date unreported) the military bases of the 754th battalion, which won the title of the “Oh Jung-heup 7th Regiment,” and the 1266th transportation squadron of the North Korean People’s Army and ordered them to “strengthen combat capabilities.” (Nov. 17 & 20, Central Broadcasting Station)

The Central Broadcasting Station stressed (Nov. 15), “As Comrade Kim Jong-il indicated that ‘wholehearted solidarity is the very essence of our revolution and is more powerful and victorious than the atomic bomb,’ the wholehearted solidarity of the 10 million soldiers united as one under the leaders of the revolution will surely enable our revolution to be forever victorious and its prospects to be bright.”

International Issues

The Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland asserted through a statement delivered by its spokesperson that “the ongoing maneuvers being made by the US to permanently station its members of the Military Armistice Commission at the Joint Security Area (JSA) of Panmunjeom and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) clearly show the cunning intentions of the US to impair the construction of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex and other inter-Korean cooperative projects.” (Nov. 19, Central Broadcasting Station)

The Central Broadcasting Station reported (Nov. 21) that “according to news reports, Japan and the US conducted a joint deployment exercise at the military base of the Japanese Self-Defense Air Forces located in Tsuiki, Fukuoka Prefecture on November 18, justifying it as a response exercise for possible overseas military clashes.”

Inter-Korean Issues

Around the 14th anniversary of the foundation of the Pan-Korean Alliance for Unification, Pyeongyang Broadcasting Service emphasized (Nov. 20) that “the establishment of the Pan-Korean Alliance for Unification is the shining product of the wise leadership displayed by the great leader Kim Il-sung and General Kim Jeong-il, who have set guidelines for the formation of pan-Korean unification fronts for national unification and have vigorously led the fight to realize such goals.”

Regarding the South Korean government’s decision to “block access to pro-North Korean websites,” the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland made the unreasonable assertion that “the Internet homepages that were deemed problematic by the South Korean authorities enable visitors to properly understand our Republic and offer unification and patriotic content, actively contributing to national solidarity and unification between the North and the South as well as the great undertaking of achieving global independence.” (Nov. 20, Central Broadcasting Station)
