Inside North Korea

Accompanied by Lee Myong-su, Hyun Chul-hae and Park Jae-kyung, Kim Jong-il visited the 756th Military Company of the Korean People’s Army (date unreported) and laid down “guidelines for strengthening companies, the basic battle units of the People’s Army.” (Nov. 2, Central Broadcasting Station)

The Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly announced that it “adopted a ‘political directive on the creation of land readjustment commemoration medals’ (on Oct. 27) to glorify the achievements made through the strenuous efforts of soldiers and members of storming parties mobilized for the struggle for land readjustment aimed at brilliantly accomplishing the high-flying vision of the Party." (Nov. 3, Central Broadcasting Station)

International Issues

In its commentary titled “Overseas Military Expansion is a Road to Further Ruin,” Rodong Shinmun argued that "Japanese reactionaries are engaging in a suicidal act akin to digging their own graves by vehemently pressing ahead with creation of a military power under militarism and maneuvers for overseas military expansion. Accordingly, Japanese reactionaries must awaken to the trend of the times and abandon their foolish and erroneous beliefs.” (Nov. 3, Pyongyang Broadcasting Service)

Pyongyang Broadcasting Service reported (on November 3) that "Global Exchange, an international human rights group, reportedly exposed an unfair act perpetrated in the process of the presidential election in the U.S. where foreign election observers were not even let into many polling stations."

Inter-Korean Issues

As regards the South Korean Navy’s warning shots fired in response to a North Korean patrol ship that infringed on the Northern Limit Line in the West Sea, the People’s Navy Command lashed out at the South, saying that "it constitutes an anti-nationalist act that the South Korean military engaged in a provocative armed action, which might have sparked another deadly exchange of fire in the West Sea, at a time when the U.S. is resorting to extreme maneuvers to annihilate us.” (Nov. 2, Central Broadcasting Station)

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, the Korean National Economic Cooperation Association contended that "if we sit on our hands as regards America’s maneuvers to impede construction of the Gaesong Industrial District, the railways and roads that the North and South have laboriously linked will be severed and the Mt. Geumgang tour project be disrupted, which will ultimately lead to a catastrophic war.” (Nov. 7, Central Broadcasting Station)
