DPRK to Continue to Implement Action Plan for Population and Development

    Pyongyang, October 22 (KCNA) -- The DPRK government reiterates its support to the action plan adopted at the international meeting on population and development and will as always sincerely implement this plan for the promotion of well-being of the Korean people and the sustainable development of the country and closely cooperate with international organizations such as the United Nations Population Fund and the international community in this field. A DPRK delegate said this in his speech made on October 14 when the item "Event marking the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the action plan for population and development" on the agenda of the 59th U.N. General Assembly was under discussion. He went on:
    The past decade was difficult years in the DPRK history. But its government has considered the work to implement the "Cairo action plan" as an important one related to the future development of the country and the promotion of the people's well-being and consistently pushed forward the work for population and development in conformity with the actual conditions of the country.
    Under the wise leadership of Kim Jong Il the DPRK government laid it down as the supreme principle of state activity to steadily increase the wellbeing of the people and has directed deep attention and efforts to the work to promote the health of the people and achieve the qualitative growth of population.
    Conditions of the country were hard due to consecutive years of natural disaster. But the DPRK has consistently enforced the Law on the Public Health, the Law on the Family, the Law on Sexual Equality and other laws and various policies such as compulsory free education system and free medical care system which were already adopted and effectuated to take care of the women and children at state and social expenses.
    Through an effective operation of the section doctor system the DPRK government has systematically promoted the welfare of women such as health care for them and paid deep attention to the solution of major population issues including environmental protection, urbanization of population, family planning and aging.
    During the decade, the DPRK government has taken an active part in international activities for the population and development as evidenced by its accession to the convention on eradication of all sorts of gender discrimination, while intensifying international and regional cooperation.
    He expressed deep thanks to the executive director and staff members of the UNPF, different donor countries and non-governmental organizations for having rendered sincere assistance to the DPRK in health service.
