N Korea FM doubts expediency of continued talks on nuke problem

Tokyo, Oct 5, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- North Korean Foreign Ministry questioned the expediency of continued six-sided settlement of the situation around the Pyongyang nuclear problem involving both Koreas, the United States, Russia, China and Japan. A representative of the republic`s Foreign Ministry denounced the recent draft law on human rights in North Korea adopted by the US Senate estimating it as US attempts to overthrow the legitimate government in Pyongyang. "US efforts to destroy the socialist regime in North Korea are unreasonable and therefore made talks on the nuclear problem settlement senseless," the diplomat emphasized. According to him, "North Korea has another way out as to build up deterrence forces to confront the US." Three rounds of six-party talks did not yield concrete results, though the positions of the sides were approaching a little bit. The fourth round of talks should have begun in Beijing by the end of September, but did not take place as North Korea, which accused the US of hostile policy against Pyongyang, did not agree to it. For its part, the Bush administration said North Korea was the only side to blame for the talks not to resume and reiterated that the US does see a real alternative to them. Observers are confident that Pyongyang is waiting for the results of the upcoming presidential election in the US in November, as candidate from the Democratic Party John Kerry comes out in favor of direct bilateral talks between the US and North Korea on what Pyongyang persistently insisted. /2322/1432
