Inside North Korea

Kim Jong Il, accompanied by Yon Hyong Muk, Ri Myong Su, Hyon Chol Hae, Pak Jae Gyong, Ri Yong Chol, Ri Je Gang and Ri Jae Il, paid an inspection visit to Farm No. 1116 of KPA Unit 534 (date unreported), and said, "Let us realize President Kim Il Sung's lifelong desire: enabling the people to eat rice with meat soup without fail." (Aug. 17, Central Broadcasting Station)

Rodong Sinmun stressed in an editorial that "in the current situation where there is an exchange of fire between the DPRK and the U.S., a preemptive strike is not an option for the U.S. alone, and we will never sit on our hands until the U.S. launches an attack against us." (Aug. 20, Central Broadcasting Station)

International Issues

A foreign ministry spokesperson said regarding the scheduled fourth round of the six-way talks: "In order to realize the DPRK's nuclear freeze and subsequent nuclear disarmament, the U.S. should abandon its hostility toward the DPRK. On the contrary, however, the U.S. is intensifying its hostile activities toward the DPRK. Therefore, we cannot take any steps toward freezing our nuclear program, let alone abandoning it." (Aug. 16, Pyongyang Broadcasting Service)

The Central Broadcasting Station condemned Pyongyang on Aug. 17, saying, "Japanese leaders committed an outrageous act on Aug. 15 to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II. Its cabinet members, including the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, as well as 58 lawmakers who belong to a nonpartisan group that makes visits to Yasukuni Shrine en masse, visited the shrine, which is a symbol of Japanese militarism."

Inter-Korean Issues

The Democratic Front for Peaceful Unification's Central Committee propagandized in its Aug. 18 "letter to compatriots abducted to South Korea," urging them to "vehemently protest the U.S. and its followers who forcibly abducted you to South Korea, and demonstrate patriotism for the nation. " (Aug. 18, Pyongyang Broadcasting Service)

The Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland insisted that "while the U.S. Administration is not reluctant to publicly say that it will consider all possible measures to resolve the nuclear standoff on the Korean peninsula, the U.S. imperialist and the South Korean war hawks stage the Ulchi Focus Lens 2004 military exercise, which once again testifies that they are persistently pursuing a policy of war against the DPRK." (Aug. 17, Central Broadcasting Station)
